Ingredients for Healthy Chocolate Date Balls

- Medjool dates: Pitted Medjool dates are sweet fruits that serve as the base and provide natural sweetness. Though any dates can work in this recipe, these dates are definitely the best type to use. If you have pitted dates, remove the pits before starting.
- Lemon juice: It adds a bright flavor that balances the richness.
- Tahini: This creamy sesame paste has a nutty taste and thick texture. Coconut oil can also be used here.
- Nut mixture: Chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, cashews, or walnuts add crunch and nutrition.
- Unsweetened Cocoa powder: This ingredient gives the chocolate flavor.
- Vanilla extract: A touch of this enhances overall sweetness and aroma.
- Sea salt: Just a sprinkle can bring out all the flavors.
For covering the balls, I like to use one of the following:
- Finely crushed nuts: These add a bit of extra crunch.
- Sesame seeds: A healthy option for a nutty coating.
- Shredded coconut: This adds a tropical twist to chocolate coconut protein balls.

Description to make date ball recipe for a healthy snack
Prepare the Dates and Nuts

To start, I soak the dates in hot water for about 10 minutes. This helps to soften them and makes them easier to work with. After soaking, I remove the pits and tear the dates into small pieces, discarding the pits.
Next, I prepare the nuts. I prefer using a mix of nuts, like almonds or walnuts. To chop them, I place them in a plastic bag and use a rolling pin or mallet to break them down into small pieces. The finer the pieces, the better they mix into the balls.
Mix the Ingredients Together
Once the dates and nuts are ready, I combine them in a bowl. To enhance the flavors, I add a splash of lemon juice and a spoonful of tahini. Using a fork, I mash the dates and nuts together until they form a paste.
After this, I mix in cocoa powder, a drop of vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Stirring the mixture well is important to ensure that all ingredients are evenly distributed. I taste the mix—if I want it to be more chocolatey, I add a little more cocoa powder.
Create Balls

With the mixture ready, I dampen my hands slightly. This helps prevent the mixture from sticking to my fingers. I then take small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls. I like to keep them small, as they make great healthy truffles, but you can make them bigger if you prefer a heartier snack.
After shaping the balls, I roll the chocolate balls with dates in various coatings. Crushed nuts, shredded unsweetened coconut, or more cocoa powder work well. These coatings add texture and extra flavor, making each bite even more enjoyable.
Pop in the Fridge Before Enjoying

After making the balls, I place them in an airtight container. I store them in the fridge, where they can last for about a week. If I want them to last even longer, I put them in the freezer. They freeze well, and I can enjoy a healthy treat anytime.
Storage Instructions for My Vegan Date Energy Balls

Store healthy chocolate date balls in an airtight container to keep them fresh longer and prevent them from drying out. In the refrigerator, they can last up to 2 weeks at a temperature of 40°F (4°C) or lower. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. To freeze, place the balls in a single layer on a baking sheet; transfer them to a container or freezer bag once frozen. Ensure the container is completely sealed to keep out moisture and odors.
When you’re ready to enjoy them, remove the balls from the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before eating. If you notice any change in texture or smell, it’s best to discard them. Always prioritize safety when it comes to food storage.

When I have the girls over for a couple of alcohol-free drinks, I love serving a platter of these energy balls with a couple of Passion Fruit Margarita Mocktials or the easiest Pina Colada Mocktails you will ever make.
If you want to serve these chocolate date balls at your kid's next birthday party, I recommend preparing a jug of refreshing Lime Watermelon Juice.
Healthy Chocolate Energy Balls with Dates
Ingredients
- 7 Mejdool dates
- 2 TBs lemon juice
- 2 TBs tahini I imagine coconut oil would also work here
- 1 cup of Voyageur Ultra nut mixture chopped (or a mix of almonds, pecans, cashews, walnuts or any other nuts of your choice)
- 4 TBs cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- a sprinkle of sea salt
- 4 TBs finely crushed nuts or 2 TBs sesame seeds cocoa powder or shredded coconut, for covering
Instructions
- Soak dates in hot water for 10 minutes, to soften. Remove flesh from pit, and tear into pieces (discard pit). Chop nuts into small pieces (I like to put them in a plastic bag and hit them with a mullet or a rolling pin. They more you hit, the finer the pieces).
- In a bowl, mix dates, lemon juice, tahini and nuts, mashing everything with a fork. Add in cocoa powder, vanilla extract and sea salt, and stir well to combine. Taste - if you feel like you want a more chocolatey flavour, add a bit more cocoa.
- With wet hands, form mixture into balls (small balls are what I prefer, and they work well as healthy truffles; bigger balls are more substantial energy treats). Roll in crushed nuts, sesame seeds, cocoa powder or shredded coconut.
- These chocolate nut energy balls will keep in the fridge for a week, and in the freezer for a lot more.
