Inspiration for My Passion Fruit Margarita Mocktail Recipe

In the summer of the year I turned 19, my friends and I would go out to this student bar in town. Located in a run-down building next to a local radio station, this mainstay bar was no frills and all chill; most of the other people in the bar drank the cheapest beer on tap and came out in their shorts and sandals.
But not us. Me and my girlfriends fancied ourselves women of the world; we would dress up in skirts and heels, dabbing bits of perfume behind our ears and going with the less-is-more approach to make up (thank god). And so, while everyone around us drank swill, we ordered a fancy cocktail with little platters of shrimp stuffed avocados, duck bruschetta, and decadent mini croissants with cinnamon and chocolate.
My favorite cocktail on the menu was a frozen passionfruit margarita. Filled with seeds and a tangy-sweet flavor, this drink reminded me of what I imagined a tropical vacation would be like: refreshing, fun and elegant. It also cost an arm and a leg, which on my tiny monthly salary as a waitress meant I could order only one drink a night.
Passion fruit and its wonders

Passion fruit is a sometimes sweet, sometimes sour fruit native to Brazil. The wonderful thing about passion fruit is not only its tropical flavor and crunchy edible seeds, but its health benefits. It is rich in vitamins A, C and B complex and is packed with sodium, calcium and iron.
Having trouble sleeping or struggle with anxiety? Eating passion fruit is thought to calm our nervous system and in many countries is used as a sleep aid.
While today we are using our passion fruit in the passion fruit margarita mocktail recipe, there are many other delicious ways to use your fruit (if you are like me and buy multiple at a time!) Try my Pornstar martini or passionfruit orange Mocktail for another colorful, fizzy non-alcoholic beverage. Alternatively, for the ideal pool-side batch Mocktail, try my passionfruit and coconut water.
Ingredient Highlights:

Frozen passionfruit purée: You can make passion fruit puree by simply blending frozen passion fruit with a little bit of water. This makes for a refreshing, frozen passion fruit margarita. I like to also add a bit of fresh fruit nectar to the top of my drink for some added texture.
Simple syrup (or agave syrup): Learn how to make your own simple syrup here. Or, if you have honey or agave syrup already in your pantry, it is a great alternative sweetener. The beauty of syrup syrup is is that you can take any recipe you are comfortable with, like this one, and make it special every time by using a new simple syrup recipe. For this passion fruit drink, I like combining it with orange simple syrup, cherry simple syrup or watermelon simple syrup because it complements the fruity flavors of the Mocktail well.

Equipment for Alcohol-Free Drinking

I love to serve margaritas in traditional whiskey tumbler. I think it makes them look more elegant and timeless. But for a frozen margarita mocktail, nothing beats a gorgeous coupe glass for that timeless look! I used copper-rimmed ribbed coupe glasses to present this drink, and I just love the way it looks.
Step-by-Step Instructions to make delicious frozen margarita Mocktail
Blend the mocktail

In a blender, combine the passionfruit purée, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and Ritual Tequila Alternative. The tangy and sweet flavors will blend together deliciously. Next, add the crushed ice to the blender. Blend everything on high speed until the mixture becomes thick and slushy, which should take around 30 seconds to 1 minute. The refreshing and icy texture is essential for this frozen cocktail.
Serve the non-alcoholic passion fruit margarita

Once the blending is complete, pour the frozen passionfruit cocktail into glasses. If desired, you can rim the glasses with salt like a traditional margarita for an extra burst of flavor. Garnish each glass filled with the slushy juice and lime mixture by adding a slice of fresh lime. Serve immediately with a spoon and a straw so you can fully enjoy the delicious and refreshing passionfruit cocktail.
Mocktail to Cocktail
To convert this mocktail to a cocktail, make the following adaptations:
- Substitute the Ritual margarita replacement with your favorite tequila. A good reposado would work here.
- For a smoky touch, use mezcal - my favorite is Mezcal Amarás Espadin.
- To play up the Brazilian inspiration for this drink, you can use cachaça.
Drink Responsibly & Enjoy!
Top Tips!
For stronger passionfruit flavor, add more passionfruit purée or fresh juice.
Leaving the seeds in your purée signifies authenticity, but feel free to strain them out for a smoother drink.
Optional: Rim glass with spicy chili salt.
Serving Suggestions and Accompanying Dishes

Of course, this margarita would be right at home at any Cinco De Mayo celebration. But even outside the holiday, make this margarita a part of a traditional Latin-inspired meal with some Caribbean flair.
Crispy air-fryer plantain chips provide a crunchy side option. For a gluten-free bread option, the cornbread recipe is comforting. For a quick and easy dessert and a healthy snack in-between meals, make a couple of these chocolate date energy balls.

Expert Notes
- You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less syrup to taste.
- For a stronger passionfruit flavor, increase the amount of purée or feel free to add some freshly squeezed fruit juice to the mix.
- If the purée has passion fruit seeds, rejoice because it's the real deal. But know that you can remove the seeds if you strain the puree through a fine-mesh strainer before using.
- You can also add a splash of water, sparkling water or club soda to the blender if the mixture is too thick.
- Adjust the amount of Ritual Tequila Alternative according to your preference.
- You can also rim your glass with a spicy chili salt rim like in my spicy pineapple margarita recipe.
