What is a black russian? Enter my Black Russian Mocktail Recipe – a simplified take on its White Russian counterpart. This mocktail is a subtle nod to coffee lovers, offering a balanced blend of robust coffee flavors with hints of chocolate and vanilla.

What is a black Russian?
Taking inspiration from the classic Black Russian drink crafted by Belgian bartender Gustave Tops in the late 1940s, this mocktail pays homage to the historical roots of mixology. Originally concocted at the Hotel Metropole in honor of the American ambassador, Perle Mesta, it brings a touch of sophistication to your glass.
What makes this mocktail truly remarkable is its simplicity – just two simple ingredients. Lyre's offers their coffee oringinale spirit reminiscent of Kahlua, with a subtle warmth. Alternatively, for those seeking a different path, a 3-ingredient coffe mocktail, alcohol-free white russian, or my homemade NA Kahlua serves as an accessible and equally delicious option.
This mocktail has earned a spot in our top three go-to drinks for the holiday season. The allure lies in the flavors of coffee and chocolate – a familiar and comforting combination. It's a nod to tradition with a contemporary twist, perfect for those moments when you simply want to unwind with a subtle, coffee-infused treat.
White Russian vs Black Russian Cocktail
The Black Russian cocktail is a classic two-ingredient cocktail consisting of vodka and kahlua (coffee liqueur) - basically an adult version of an iced coffee. It was invented by Gustave Tops in 1949 at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, Belgium, to honor the American ambassador to Luxembourg, Perle Mesta. In contrast, the White Russian includes an additional ingredient: cream. This gives the drink a richer, smoother taste, perfect for those who enjoy a creamy, indulgent treat.
While the Black Russian offers bold, bitter notes of coffee and chocolate, the White Russian’s cream adds a sweet, velvety texture. The black russian and the white russian remain iconic in mixology for their rich flavors and ease of preparation, making them timeless, tasty favorites for any occasion.
Ingredients For A Black Russian Mocktail
These simple black russian ingredients are simple and easy to come by. You'll have your drink in no time!
- Non Alcoholic Vodka: I enjoy using the Strykk brand of NA Vodka.
- Non Alcoholic Coffee Syrup or Spirit: Lyre's Coffee Originale or swap with my Homemade Kahlua. In a pinch, a strong cold brew coffee is perfect.
- Garnishes (optional): The most common garnish is going to be a maraschino cherry or 3, whether it's the bright red one or a luxardo cocktail cherry.
- Ice Cubes: You can truly use any ice cubes you have on hand. My only recommendation is to use large ice instead of crushed or shards of ice. Larger ice cubes melt slower, thus not diluting your drink as fast.

Expert Tips To Make The Best Black Russian Mocktail
- Keeping A Chilled Mocktail - While serving your drink over a large cube of ice is great for keeping this perfect drink cool. You can ensure it stays cold longer by storing all of the ingredients and the glass in the fridge before serving. Glasses can be stored in the freezer, but remember that the ingredients do not contain any alcohol, so they shouldn't be stored in the freezer.
- Experiment With Coffee Flavors - If using coffee as your base instead of a NA spirit, try to switch it up with flavored coffee. My favorite is hazelnut, but you can choose your favorite and really make this drink your own. Fresh ground coffee beans or the strong coffee flavors of espresso will truly create the best experience.
- Garnishing: While garnishes are optional, a maraschino cherry or luxardo cocktail cherry can add a touch of sweetness and visual appeal. Experiment with different garnishes to find your preferred finishing touch. Add cinnamon sticks or twist of orange peel to level up this flavorful drink.
