If you're like me and your TikTok for you page is filled with summer drink recipes, you've probably already seen a dirty soda recipe. They're all so mesmerizing: tall cups, swirls of color, and maybe some sinkers. It has been showing up not only on social media, but in local stores as well.
So What Actually Is a Dirty Soda?
You take a carbonated soda, add a flavored syrup or creamer, maybe throw in a mix-in like candied fruit or boba, and end up with something that drinks more like a dessert than a simple drink. It's sweeter, creamier, and way more fun to look at than anything that comes out of a standard soda machine, it's perfect for Instagram photos!
My first time trying it, I had a coconut dirty soda. I had to remake it at home because I realized it was basically a soda with cream and syrup, I can play around with different combinations at home.
Where Did Dirty Soda Come From?

Okay so dirty soda is not actually a new thing, it just feels that way because of TikTok. It's been around for years in Utah, where independent soda shops built whole communities around the build-your-own drink format. Chains like Swig turned that into a full drive-thru business and started expanding beyond the western US, which is really how the rest of the country started catching on.
The sign that it's fully gone mainstream though? McDonald's. Starting in May, nearly 14,000 locations added six new specialty drinks to the menu, including a Dirty Dr Pepper with vanilla flavor and cold foam. When McDonald's puts something on the menu, it's not a trend anymore, it's just a thing people drink now.
Why It Works as a Summer Drink
Cold drink, built exactly how you want it, and it looks amazing in a photo. The layered colors and toppings are the kind of thing you photograph before you even take a sip, and because they're nonalcoholic, you don't have to think twice about who at the table can have one. If you've never made one before, this dirty soda recipe is a great place to start.
And if you're hosting this summer, this is your sign to set up a dirty soda bar. Grab a few sodas, a creamer or two, and whatever fun mix-ins you can find at the store. For the syrups, I'd go homemade if you can. My raspberry syrup, cherry syrup, and blueberry syrup all work really well here and take maybe ten minutes to make. Put everything out and let your guests build their own. I promise you it becomes the thing everyone is talking about, and you barely had to do anything to make it happen.
Major Brands Are Jumping In
And it's not just small soda shops anymore. In April 2026, PepsiCo launched Dirty Mountain Dew nationwide, so you don't even need to find a specialty shop to get in on it. Dr Pepper also brought back its Creamy Coconut flavor this spring, which, if you haven't tried it yet, please do.
The trend has even crossed over into alcohol with Mike's Hard Lemonade launching Mike's Dirty Lemonade in four flavors nationwide back in March 2026. At this point you can walk into almost any grocery or convenience store and find some version of a dirty soda without even looking that hard. It's everywhere, and honestly I think we're just getting started.
Worth Trying Before It's Everywhere

Honestly, now is the best time to get into dirty soda before it becomes just another thing everyone orders without thinking twice about it. Pick one up at a drive-thru, grab a can at the grocery store, or just raid your fridge and see what you can throw together with whatever soda you already have. However you get there, I think you're going to like it a lot more than you expect.
