This spiced cranberry juice is packed with nutritional value and can be served hot or cold depending on the season (and your preference). It is a rejuvenating mocktail that uses fresh cranberries and festive spices to warm the soul.

This cranberry punch recipe combines a tart yet sweet cocktail of flavors, introduced to me by my dear Russian Grandmother as a young girl. It's emotional significance to me is why I am sharing with you the traditional recipe, so that you too can experience this cold fighting beverage that dates back to the 16th century.
Not only are cranberries rich in antioxidants and antibacterial properties which help to ward off common cold or flu symptoms, they have many other health benefits also, including; anti aging properties, promotion of skin health, hearth health support and protection against certain forms of cancer.
Combined with orange zest and festive spices, you have yourself a beverage that is a perfect balance of tangy sweetness with an aroma that makes you want to curl up under a blanket and enjoy each comforting sip.
On the other hand, drinking this beverage cold on a hot summers day can be extremely thirst quenching and it will provide you with a boost of natural energy.
It is what I like to call a very 'flexible' recipe, allowing you to add more spice and warmth to taste.
Ingredients for Spiced Cranberry Juice
You can make the cranberry juice with these simple ingredients:

- Cranberries: Serve as the tangy and vibrant base of the drink, imparting a refreshing tartness that balances the sweetness. Using fresh cranberries in the recipe provides a vibrant tartness and juiciness, contributing to the refreshing flavor profile of the mocktail when the cranberry skins burst. On the other hand, dried cranberries offer a chewier texture and a slightly sweeter taste, adding a subtle hint of sweetness to the drink.
- Cold Water: Provides the essential liquid component, allowing the flavors of the cranberries and spices to infuse.
- Orange or Lemon Zest: Adds a bright citrusy flavor and aroma, enhancing the overall complexity of the drink.
- Cinnamon Stick: Infuses the mocktail with warmth and subtle spice notes, contributing to its comforting and aromatic profile.
- Any or all of the following spices according to preference:
- Spices (optional): Offer depth and complexity, with variations such as cloves, cardamom pods, allspice, star anise, and grated ginger. These spices can be adjusted according to personal preference, allowing for a customized flavor profile.
- Agave Syrup, Honey, or Sugar: Acts as a sweetener to balance the tartness of the cranberries, providing a harmonious sweetness to the drink. The amount can be adjusted to achieve the desired level of sweetness.
- Other Fruit (optional): Provides an opportunity for additional flavor and variety, allowing for experimentation with different fruit combinations such as strawberries, blueberries, apples, and pears.

Directions to make Spiced Cranberry Punch
Wash and Prepare fruit

Wash the fresh cranberries and any other fruit you decide to use.
Combine the cranberries, orange (or lemon) zest and cold water in a medium-sized pot or strainer.
Prepare and blend spices on stove-top

Tie any spices you are using in a small cheesecloth pouch. If you don't have any cheesecloth, don't worry, just add the spices to the pot as they are.
Bring the contents of the saucepan to a gentle simmer over medium heat, and remove from heat about a minute after it comes to a boil, to preserve the vitamins. Let cool between 30 minutes to an hour.
Once cranberry concoction has cooled down, remove the cheesecloth pouch. Pour the juice through a tight-mesh colander into a one-liter jar, taking care to strain all the juice out of the berries and fruit with a wooden spoon. Then, discard the pulp.
Sweeten your spiced cranberry juice, garnish, and serve!

Next, taste and sweeten. Stir in the honey, agave syrup, simple syrup, or sugar. Alternatively, leave unsweetened if you prefer unsweetened cranberry juice. Let stand overnight or for a few hours, for the flavors to mend and come together.
Serve cold, at room temperature, or heated gently in the microwave for a cozy drink during the holiday season.
Storage for Spiced Cranberry Punch

Once your easy to make spiced cranberry punch is ready, it can last a while in the fridge as long as you store it properly. Pop it into a sealed container and place it in the refrigerator, where it can stay perfectly delicious for up to 5 days.
If you're looking to extend its shelf life even further, consider freezing it. Transfer the juice into an airtight container and tuck it away in the freezer, where it will remain in good shape for up to 3 months. When you're ready to drink it again, simply thaw it out in the refrigerator.
Top Tips!
Do not throw out the leftover pulp. It is packed full of vitamins, and will serve as a wonderful addition to muffins, cake, or as flavorings for homemade kombucha.

From Mocktail to Cocktail...

If you are feeling saucy, you can easily turn this cranberry juice into a holiday cocktail! Add vodka, spiced rum, bourbon or tequila to make this into cranberry margarita, mule, or cranberry bourbon. For a margarita, combine tequila, triple sec, lime juice and top with the cranberry juice. For a mule, mix vodka, lime juice, cranberry juice and ginger beer.
For the festive Christmas season, you can turn this cranberry mocktail into a mulled wine or hot toddy. For sangria, mix cranberry juice with red wine, garnish with cranberries and orange slices. For a hot toddy, warm the juice and add brandy, whiskey or rum. You can also add an ounce fresh ginger, nutmeg, or rosemary for a more festive flavor profile.
