  • Water
  • White sugar – Use regular white granulated sugar. Feel free to sift this before making rose syrup.
  • Food-grade dried rose petals or dried rose budsFinding dried rose petals might be a bit challenging at your local store. Especially when you’re looking for edible rose petals. If you have access to fresh rose petals (pesticide free) and would like to make your own. Most edible roses will come in a pink color, if you’re well-versed in making your own, the color options are limitless. Red roses will obviously yield a darker color with the same lovely aroma.

Other sugars used in making homemade simple syrups

Cane Sugar – Cane sugar syrup is earthier, bolder, and gives a toasted sugar flavor than white sugar. Not as strong as turbinado or molasses.

Brown Sugar – This syrup is called Demerara Syrup. Great for coffee cocktails and darker beverages.

Palm Sugar – Golden in color with a cotton candy sweetness.

Honey – 3:2 honey to water ratio

Agave Nectar– 2:1 agave to water

How To Make

  1. In a small saucepan add the water, sugar, and rose buds. Heat over medium heat.
  2. Stir to combine and dissolve the sugar.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, and boil for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and let it sit to cool to room temperature.
  5. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the sugar syrup. Pour into an airtight container, preferably a sterilized glass jar, using a funnel if needed.
  6. Seal tightly and store in the refrigerator.

Adding rose syrup to mocktails and cocktails can easily be done in both fashions.

  • Rose syrup is wonderful in bubbly drinks, like a rose, or any sparkling wine.
  • Add a bit of this gorgeous floral syrup to your citrus cocktails. Especially tasty when paired with gin or any gin alternative.
  • Enjoy in a cream based beverage as well.

Tips!

– Use fresh organic ingredients when possible for more intense fragrant notes!
– Don’t let your syrup simmer too quickly as this could cause the sugar to burn.
– Avoid using fresh roses or rose petals from a store-bought floral arrangement. These flowers likely contain pesticides.
– Enhance the rose color with a few drops of pink food coloring. You can also combine dried rose buds with dried hibiscus flower petals when making the syrup. You’ll still maintain the rose essence with added tartness from the hibiscus, and a brighter color without adding artificial coloring.

Can I use artificial sweeteners?

Artificial sweeteners don’t work well in this recipe because they will not dissolve properly due to their chemical makeup. Natural sugars such as honey or maple syrup can also be used but may alter the color slightly when cooked down.

Do I need to strain after cooking?

Yes! Straining is important because it removes any sediment left behind from cooking down rose petals/buds so you get clear liquid every time!
